Successfully surviving exam season is a whirlwind, so work hard and play hard to conquer this winter
The end of the semester is quickly approaching and that means so are the exams. It is important to emphasize that there is no general ‘correct’ way or standard for speaking about the exam period. Everyone’s brain works differently. However, that’s not to say there aren’t methods and habits that make surviving exam season easier, so read on to discover them!
The first thing you need to consider in the run-up to exams is time.
With what feels like minimal daylight, it sometimes feels difficult to have a productive day. Adopting a new positive habit as part of your daily routine adds that sense of structure to work with. It also has a positive impact on the way you divide your time between your personal life and university.
Knowing how your time will be spent and using it in a positive way will help you thrive, as it gives you more time to prepare for the assessment and can (hopefully) prevent you from having to pull an all-nighter.
The second key factor to surviving this time is taking care of yourself both mentally and physically. It may not make or break it, but a good night’s sleep, hearty and nutritious meals, hydration and exercise all play a role in good performance and completing exams and assignments.
It’s hard to think about all the healthy habits a person should have because it doesn’t feel like there’s time to do everything. Realistically, we’re all just trying to get through college one day at a time. It’s okay not to have it all figured out or to figure it out as you go.
Making the effort to introduce good and healthy habits, such as cooking something for yourself that isn’t pesto pasta, taking your neglected water bottle to college, making time to go to the gym during long study days, and going to bed at a reasonable time is already won half the battle.
Last but not least, the last key factor for successful survival is taking your university work seriously, but also finding balance with the rest of life.
The whole point of college is to get a higher education and enjoy your college years at the same time. Making memories, friends, connections and exploring life as a student determines your future as much as exam results. It’s perfectly acceptable to want both seriousness and fun, and we all choose to balance this in different ways.
Work hard, but don’t forget to play hard too and reward yourself after an exam with some time away from the library, a sweet treat, a pint with friends or a walk in the park. Enjoy your time, experience life at its full capacity and work to be the person you want to be. That is the key to successfully surviving this exam season.
